Branding?
One of the most saddening things that we see in the business world everyday is
the amount of hard earned profits and personal savings wasted on marketing and
advertising tactics that should've never been implemented.
Businesses all over the country spend billions of dollars on billboards,
radio, TV, magazine ads, newspaper ads, in-store signage, coffee mugs, t-shirts
with their name printed on them, direct mail campaigns and worst of all the
salaries of over-zealous ad salesmen that will do anything they can to sell
you ad space - even if they know it won't work for you. Most of these sales
people are trained on how the "big boys" like McDonalds, General Motors
and Coca-Cola spend their marketing dollars which has absolutely no relevance
to you, unless you have about $1 billion to spend creating a brand.
If you're who this article was intended for, you'd be happy if $1 billion
was your top line gross sales revenue let alone your marketing budget!
If you haven't discovered that the stuff the big boys do won't work for you,
hang in there, when you let somebody start a "branding" campaign for you or
let ad salesmen run your marketing strategy and you don't have over $150
Million per year for about 10 years to invest on creating this "brand". You'll
experience what I'm talking about first hand, and believe me, you won't be
happy about it.
Don't get me wrong - the desire to have a recognized "brand" is not a bad idea.
In fact, if you can get to a point that companies like McDonalds and Coca-Cola
are when it comes to brand recognition you should be proud of yourself. The
brand that they have is one of their most valuable assets. The problem for small
and mid-sized businesses lies in what it takes to get to this point.
Branding takes money, a good product or service AND a lot of time.
If you don't have all 3 of those components in place you better start looking in
another direction until you get to that point.
Businesses that produce anywhere between $500,000 and $500,000,000 per year in
gross sales revenue need to get immediate results from their marketing efforts.
If they spend a dollar they need at least two back - at least. If they run a "branding"
campaign they're not going to be able to quantify what kind of response an ad
is getting let alone get money back in their pocket for the ad they just spent
a lot of money on to place.
The brand will come over time if you really do have a good product or service.
If you deserve it, you'll get it - it just takes time. In the meantime you've got
